More than 50 customs workers, suspected of being a part of the so-called customs mafia, have been suspended fom duty. "While court proceedings against the suspects charged with abuse of office are in progress, we cannot terminate their employment and hire new workers in their place,” Customs Department Director Predrag Petronijevic said on Monday at a news conference in Belgrade. 50 customs workers suspended from duty He could not say the exact scale of damage the state had incurred as a result of the customs workers’ criminal conduct. Former head of the Customs Department, Dragan Jerinic, is no longer employed with the service which currently has 2,600 people on its pay roll. “Jerinic is legally entitled to six months worth of severance pay,” Petronijevic added. The customs service collected EUR 191mn in duties and taxes in the period between January 1 and August 20, 22 percent more compared to the same period last year. However, the department is facing a lack of manpower and professional staff following the arrest of more than 50 officers in 2006. In spite of the shortage, Petronijevic announced stricter supervision of customs services and workers to prevent a repeat of last year’s situation. “The Serbian Customs Department will introduce numerous new measures for curbing corruption and money laundering, and oversee their implementation together with the Finance Ministry,” he said.
