Đinđić trial nears end

“I think that at this point Serbia is ready to receive precisely the amount of justice we will get, and the amount of truth we have heard so far. I think we, as a society, are not prepared to hear more truth than we have already. Therefore, this may not be simply a matter for the court,” Popović said.

Nenad Vuksanović, the lawyer for the second accused Zvezdan Jovanović, also believes the trial is drawing to a close. Vuksanović, however, sees nothing positive in that, stressing the court was under pressure and in a hurry.

“What this is all about is closing the procedure, irrelevant of the truth. The truth itself doesn’t matter here, what matters, due to a political hysteria prevalent in the society, is to have this end as soon as possible, in order to, so to speak, remove the weight from everyone’s shoulders,” Vuksanović said.

The trial of the organizers and executors of the murder of Serbian prime minister Zoran Đinđić, assassinated a little over four years ago, took three and a half years to date.

Although the verdict in the case seems to be in the offing, the procedure is marred by the fact five of those indicted for the crime remain at large.

Police are still searching for Milan Jurišić, Ninoslav Konstantinović, Miloš Simović, Sreten Kalinić and Vladimir Milisavljević.  An outstanding international arrest warrant was issued for the five suspects in 2003.
