Collective refugee centers die out

They literary fear for their future since the authorities have announced to close the remaining collective centers throughout Serbia.

More than 1000 refugees sought help in the Kuršumlija collective centre in the last 12 years. Most of them used it as a temporary stop until they found jobs and moved to other towns or abroad. As many as 200 persons currently dwell in the centre.

Most of these people have no source of income. The financial aid they receive is far from enough to suit their bare necessities. The Red Cross Organization has secured three meals a day.

Numerous collective centers have been shut down, and the remaining few are also expected to close its doors.

“I am aware that will happen at one point in time. it is inevitable that we will eventually have to leave this place,” one of the center’s residents said.
The majority of foreign donors have backed out of Serbia, and the state lacks appropriate programs and mechanism to take care of the collective center’s residents.
