ME: Inmate died of natural causes

Stefanović, aged 26, died on February 12. He was one of the Niš prison inmates injured when police quelled a prison uprising last November.

Earlier this week, a Leskovac-based human rights council said “Gendarmerie officers who raided the prison on November 24, 2006 brutally beat Stefanović”.

The council’s legal representative Dragutin Vidosavljević said Stefanović was the victim of both “police torture and inadequate medical care”, as inmates claim prison authorities would not allow them to receive treatment at the local hospital “until they passed out”.

Vidosavljević also said the inmates were set file criminal complaints against the Gendarmerie members and the prison authorities, alleging abuse and torture.
