Ex-Croatian Interior Minister Ivan Jarnjak claims the police learnt about crimes in Pakracka poljana while they were working on the murder of the Zec family. Members of Tomislav Mercep’s unit are responsible for the murder of five members of the Serb Zec family in Zagreb in 1991. “Croatian police knew about crimes against Serbs” Interior minister’s wartime adviser Mercep is on trial for war crimes against Serb civilians in Zagreb, Pakrac and Kutina in late 1991. Mercep is charged with murder of 43 persons, including three members of the Zec family, and with disappearance of another three persons. Jarnjak said that it was impossible to conduct an investigation in the area of Pakrac due to war operations and that he personally never received any report on events in the area. When asked whether he was aware of the camps in Pakracka poljana and detention of civilians, he said that he was not aware of it, Croatian media have reported. Jarnjak stressed that he did not know whether Mercep had been in command of the unit in Pakracka poljana but that he had seen him on television several times at the time and that he had met some units that called themselves “Mercepovci” in Gospic. The witness said that units in the beginning of the war used to take the names of persons that proved themselves in battles and that units in Osijek were called “Glavas’s“ after General Branimir Glavas, in Virovitica “Decak’s“ after General Djuro Decak and in Gospic “Norac’s” after General Mirko Norac. According to him, Mercep as the adviser did not have any executive authority and there were no complaints to his work. He testified that the Croatian police (MUP) had formed a division tasked with investigation of war crimes in the fall of 1991. Jarnjak was Interior Minister Ivan Vekic’s deputy from August 1991 until April 1992 when he became the interior minister. He was in office until 1996. Vekic will also testify at the today’s hearing. Former Assistant Interior Minister for Public Safety Smiljan Reljic said in court on Tuesday that then top state officials had been aware of the illegal actions in Pakracka poljana that Mercep is accused of. Mercep denied he was responsible for the crimes when the trial started on February 10. Tomislav Mercep (Beta, file) Beta
