A majority of Montenegro's citizens are still against their country joining NATO, according to a new survey. The survey was conducted by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM) from Podgorica. Montenegrins still against NATO membership According to this, in a referendum, about 40 percent would vote against joining the western military alliance, 32 percent would vote in favor, while 28 percent did not have an opinion on this issue. The survey showed that the number of those opposing NATO membership has declined compared to last year when 43.3 were against. CEDEM analysts pointed out that the number of NATO supporters in Montenegro was increasing from the point of view of a long-term trend. Most of those polled said they believed that the country’s accession into NATO would have a positive effect on its relations with U.S. and EU member states, while a large percentage thought it would at the same time have a negative impact on Montenegro's ties with Russia and Serbia. 54.7 percent said they thought it was the government and ruling structures that would benefit the most from Montenegro joining NATO, while 17.2 percent said NATO membership would be to the benefit of citizens. The survey has also shown that 68 percent of those polled believed the issue of a possible NATO accession should be decided on in a referendum.
