Slovenia's parliament has adopted a declaration on the Western Balkans which aims to strengthen relations and cooperation with the countries in the region. The declaration represents a framework of guidelines for Slovenia's actions in the Western Balkans which was adopted by the government earlier this month. Slovenia adopts declaration on W. Balkans With both of these documents Slovenia wants to create a more favorable climate for realization of its national interests as well as to contribute to a permanent stability in the region, Slovenian MPs said. Some of the main points of the declaration say that the Balkans represents a priority for the Slovenian foreign policy and economy, that Slovenia supports accession of the countries of the region into Euro-Atlantic institutions and that the country is advocating good neighborly relations with all the states in the region. The declaration caused a stormy debate in parliament as opposition MPs said that the document came "ten years too late", that it had been done unprofessionally in a haphazard manner, and that "one could not make heads or tails out of it". President of the parliament’s Foreign Policy Committee Janja Klasinc supported the declaration, just like her Social Democrats parliamentary group, explaining that Slovenia had "drifted away from the Western Balkans in the past 20 years but that things changed now".
