The European Court of Human Rights has dropped a lawsuit filed against Croatia by the Association of World War II Concentration Camp Prisoners. Their request for compensation worth EUR 500mn was also dismissed with an explanation that Croatia was not a signatory to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. European court drops WWII lawsuit against Croatia The court dismissed the lawsuit on those grounds, said reports from Strasbourg. The surviving concentration camp prisoners and their descendants reacted by saying that they doubted the legal validity of the ruling. As one of the arguments they state the fact that the negative answer, which arrived in early May, was not sent by the trial chamber but by an administrative department clerk, identified as Valentina Grdelic. The association's president, Gojko Knezevic, filed the lawsuit on behalf of 9,000 former prisoners, accusing Croatia of war crimes and crimes against humanity, which has no statute of limitations according to the Charter of the UN. The association has confirmed for Tanjug news agency that Knezevic sent a letter of protest to ECHR President Jean-Paul Costa, asking him whether is was possible that Croatia would remain unpunished for persecuting and holding captive almost a million Serbs, Jews and Roma, and whether the court was “again killing the victims and violating the UN Charter”. The persecution and mass killings happened during the time of the WW2 puppet Nazi Independent state of Croatia (NDH) regime.
