Oliver Knezovic, the chief suspect in the murder of a Sarajevo FC fan, says he is not guilty of the murder of Vedran Pujic and that he fired in the air. In an interview for Nova TV before turning himself into police, Knezovic pleaded his innocence and said that a number of people had been firing gunshots. Runaway suspect denies killing Sarajevo fan “After we’d all taken the pistol off a policeman, it ended up with me. The policeman knows my name as I gave it back to him and told him my name, and that I was a former member of the army and police. I gave all my details, so he doesn’t know anyone else but me. I apologized and returned him the pistol,” he said. Knezovic added that he had fired five times and that he had been “defending the people.” “If it hadn’t been me, it would have been someone else. Or I’d have been killed, it was close shave,” the suspect explained. He said that since an international warrant had been issued for his arrest a fortnight ago, he had been hiding over in and around Jablanica, then in Zagreb. He said that he had crossed the Croatian border with ease. Knezovic said that he had turned himself in in Croatia, as he believed he would receive a fair trial there, unlike in Bosnia-Herzegovina, adding that he had dual citizenship of the two countries. Under law, Croatia does not extradite its citizens to other countries.
