Croatia has still to confirm its borders with any of the former Yugoslav republics, which will be a problem in its EU integration, says MEP Ljudmila Novak. Regarding the most recent postponements in discussions on Croatian EU membership that have sparked increasing tension between Slovenia and Croatia, the Slovenia MEP said that Croatia had not defined its borders with any of its neighbors from the former Yugoslavia. “Croatian border woes persist” She said that this was not only an issue of relations with Slovenia, but an international problem for the EU’s future frontiers. Novak said that the numerous border proposals Croatia had submitted to the European Commission were evidence of Zagreb’s continued territorial aspirations towards Slovenia. “For Slovenia, the border problem with Croatia is not just a marginal problem, because over the last year, Croatia has in various ways tried to usurp several thousand hectares of Slovenian territory,” she explained. The MEP said that many people in Slovenia were angry at this, which had led to calls for a referendum on Croatia’s eventual EU entry. Novak called on EU officials to tell Croatia in no uncertain terms that she must, as a candidate for membership and future EU member, adhere to the rules and settle her relations with its neighbors.
