Daily: Pope to visit Montenegro

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Montenegro, daily Vecernje Novosti has learned from sources close to the Montenegrin leadership. Montenegrin diplomats have been working on preparations for the Pope’s visit for years, and efforts have intensified since Montenegro’s independence and appointment of an ambassador to the Vatican early last year. Daily: Pope to visit Montenegro Svetozar Marovic, during his visit to the Vatican in 2005 as president of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, invited the Pope to visit the country, while Montenegro President Filip Vujanovic repeated the invitation in early 2006. The late Pope John Paul II visited the Republic of Srpska (RS) and Banja Luka several years ago when Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Pavle refused to meet him. Archbishop of Montenegro Amfilohije, sources claim, is likely to at least give his tacit blessing to the Pope’s visit. Amfilohije is known to be a supporter of good relations with the Vatican.
