The European Parliament (EP) says it will help Croatia and Slovenia solve their border dispute. Chief of the EP’s Foreign Policy Commission Joan Mircea Pasku has arrived for a two-day visit to Croatia and will meet with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader. Pasku will work on helping Croatia meet the rest of its commitments for joining the EU. EP to help Croatia solve border dispute Pasku said that 2008 was a very important year for Croatia in terms of integration, adding that many judicial reforms still needed to be implemented, while a solution had to be found for the border problems that have soured relations with Slovenia and Italy in recent times. Sanader said that he was happy that the visit came ahead of the latest progress report on Croatia’s European integration. “I thanked the EP for stating last year that the negotiations would be complete in 2008. We agreed that then that this the year we were aiming for,” the Croatian prime minister said. He reiterated to the EP delegation that Croatia was committed to meeting all its obligations, but added that help would be needed from the EP, the European Commission (EC) and EU member states. EP Rapporteur for Croatia Hanes Svoboda said that he was pleased with the fact that the Croatian prime minister had clearly stated that Zagreb would intensify its activities in order to meet these obligations, and added that the EU and all the other institutions would take care of their part of the job. “We will put pressure on the Council of Europe and the EC to open a charter for common foreign and security policy, because we must take advantage of the fact that Croatia is a member of the UN Security Council,” Svoboda said. He said that a good sign of Croatia’s progress was the fact that that an official from the Serb community had assumed the post of deputy prime minister. “We will use our good relations with our Slovenian colleagues to find a solution with Croatia’s neighbor that will be based on mutual respect and understanding,” Svoboda said.
