Sweden has ruled out the possibility that an attempt to take a Kosovo family to Sweden via Macedonia involved trafficking. Swedish Ambassador Ulrika Cronenberg-Mossberg told Balkan Insight Wednesday that the border incident in which a Swedish diplomat had tried to arrange for the Kosovo residents to take a flight from Skopje airport, without having Macedonian entry stamps in their newly-issued Swedish passports, had been a case of a humanitarian nature. Sweden explains Macedonia incident On Tuesday Macedonian police spokesman Ivo Kotevski told Balkan Insight that the Swedish diplomat from the embassy in Skopje had failed to observe the proper procedures while attempt to arrange for the five people from Kosovo to depart for Sweden. Ambassador Cronenberg-Mossberg said that the diplomat involved, who works as a migration officer at the embassy, “was trying to move the Kosovo family to Sweden in order to protect them”. “That is why he issued the Swedish passports to them”, she said. “But it’s true that the people had no Macedonian entry stamps and that is our mistake. How it happened I really don’t know.” According to the police, the incident happened on Saturday when the five members of a family living in Kosovo arrived at Skopje airport, accompanied by the Swedish diplomat and escorted by soldiers from the Swedish peacekeeping contingent of KFOR. They subsequently returned to the border with Kosovo, from where the family and their Swedish military escort, traveling in three vehicles, crossed back into Kosovo, while the diplomat returned to Skopje. According to Macedonian police, the Swedish troops had driven off, ignoring border formalities. Ambassador Cronenberg-Mossberg confirmed the chain of events, but said she had “no information whatsoever that they [the Swedish vehicles] left without Macedonian permission”. “I have been to the border, yes, but none of the Macedonian border police personnel complained to me about that”, Cronenberg-Mossberg said. The ambassador added that she met Macedonian Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska on Wednesday, and offered her apology. Both sides agreed to intensify consultations about such cases in the future.
