Citizens' Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic on Tuesday resigned and announced he will be a candidate in this year's presidential elections in Serbia.

Jankovic announced that his deputy, Milos Jankovic, will take over a new ombudsman has been appointed.Jankovic's second 5-year-term as ombudsman would have expired in August. He was not eligible to be appointed to the same office a third time.
On Monday, Jankovic spoke at a reception in Belgrade marking a decade of the institution of ombudsman, to say that it was launched when it was"difficult to pronounce its name, let alone know what it was all about," adding:
"Today, Serbia has the institution of ombudsman which preserves the dignity of citizens. Take care of it, you will need it."
The reception was not attended by government representatives or other state officials, Beta reported.
Instead, representatives of independent institutions, international organizations and opposition parties turned up, including Information Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic, Equality Commissioner Brankica Jankovic, U.S. and German ambassadors Kyle Scott and Axel Dittmann, UNHCR Office in Serbia Head Hans Schroeder, Serbian Assembly's Committee on Human and Minority Rights chairman Meho Omerovic, opposition leaders Boris Tadic, Cedomir Jovanovic, Dragan Sutanovac, Zoran Zivkovic and Bosko Obradovic, and assembly member Zarko Korac.
