PM says IOC decision on Kosovo "unacceptable"

Dacic noted that the Olympic Charter envisages that a membership applicant should come from an independent country recognized by the international community as a whole.

“By this decision, the IOC has disrupted its practice to date that only a UN member could be granted a full membership. This act constitutes an abuse and malevolent politicization of sport, and IOC, as a universal organization dedicated to development of sport and promotion of understanding and friendship, has assumed the role of a political referee,” the statement reads.

“The Republic of Serbia believes that the IOC should not be a forum for controversial political decisions, which cause considerable disagreement at the international level, but should rather contribute to unity and understanding, and not lead to new divisions,” reads the statement.

The IOC granted full membership to Kosovo allowing athletes from the territory to compete at the Olympic Games n 2016.

Ethnic Albanians in the province in 2008 unilaterally declared independence, but Serbia considers the proclamation to be in violation of its Constitution and territorial integrity.
