EU foreign policy chief: Independent expert for EULEX

The High Representative said that she was informed in detail of the accusations against EULEX on Monday, just days after assuming the position on Saturday, November 1.

She said that she will enlist an independent and experienced expert for a probe into the implementation of the EULEX mandate and the allegations of corruption, adding that she still has not decided who to entrust the investigation to.

For the sake of the mission's credibility, it is important that the probe be conducted within a reasonable timeframe and in a transparent manner, she said.

"I hope that I will very soon be able to tell you who, and within what legal framework, will be conducting the investigation," Mogherini said.

Previously, a group of MEPs requested an independent probe into allegations by now suspended EULEX prosecutor Maria Bamieh of numerous abuses by top EULEX officials.

They also demanded a probe into "attempts to silence Bamieh and a journalist who wrote about the scandal."
