"Both Russia and EU important to Serbia"

"We are convinced that the process of Serbia's accession to the EU will give an added value to mutual ties between the Republic of Serbia and the Russian Federation," he was quoted as saying.

According to the presidential press service, the two officials agreed that joint projects started by Russian and Serbian companies "need more promotion - above all because their positive outcome would be a good signal to numerous Russian investors who are interested in Serbia's economy."

Speaking about the South Stream pipeline, the president "expressed his satisfaction that everything was going according to plan, and stressed the need to efficiently solve all technical problems that might appear."

Meshkov was quoted as saying that South Stream was not merely a pipeline, but also "a mechanism that will dramatically improve economic conditions in all participating countries."

During his visit to Belgrade on Wednesday, the Russian official also met with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkić, and the country's former president, now opposition politician Boris Tadić.
