BELGRADE Slovak MEP Eduard Kukan pointed to his country's experiences during EU accession and advised Serbia not to agree with all suggestions coming from the EU. Take those suggestions into consideration, define your own interests and fight for them, Kukan said in an interview to the Thursday's edition of Belgrade-based daily Politika. Serbia advised "not to agree to everything" in EU talks "However, you must be 100 percent certain that you truly deserve what you demand, stressed Kukan," who was Slovakia's foreign minister during the country's EU negotiations and accession. In this context, he advised Serbian officials to define the interests of Serbia as clearly as possible in the talks, adding that he likes the enthusiasm of Serbian politicians, but also their realism. Speaking of a possible date of Serbia's EU accession, Kukan underlined that the crucial thing is to prepare the country for the membership, regardless of whether it will take five or seven years. Serbia will become an EU member when it is ready and when the EU is ready for Serbia, said Kukan. (Beta, file) Politika Tanjug
