UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremić says that during his presidency, Serbia will be given an opportunity to represent its interests in a complex time.

NEW YORK UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic says that during his presidency, Serbia will be given an opportunity to represent its interests in a complex time. The former Serbian foreign minister made the statement on Monday in New York, after assuming his new office. Jeremic, new UNGA president, talks Serbia's "visibility" "This is a great opportunity for any country that finds itself in that position. Through the General Assembly, Serbia will be at a very visible place, and it will be a point across which many talks and negotiations will be conducted," Jeremic told Tanjug. He voiced expectation that the next 12 months would be very intensive in diplomatic terms, taking into account the overall situation in the world. The new president of the UN General Assembly added that on Tuesday he would present the agenda of the session and priorities of his presidency. Former president of the UN General Assembly Nasir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser said in a statement to Tanjug that he believed that Jeremic would perform his duties well, repeating his congratulations on Jeremic's election. He praised Jeremic as an excellent diplomat with a rich experience. I believe that very experience will help him in running the General Assembly, Qatar's diplomat said. Jeremic took over the UNGA presidency from Qatar's representative Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser at the 66th session on Monday evening. The symbolic ceremony, held at the UN Headquarters on the East River, was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who welcomed both Al-Nasser and Jeremic. After assuming the duties, Jeremic told Tanjug that during his presidency Serbia will have an opportunity to advocate its interests at this difficult time. Jeremic said that he expects the coming 12 months to be very intensive in the diplomatic sense, considering the global situation, adding that he will present Tuesday the daily agenda and priorities of the Serbian presidency. A high-level debate will be held on September 25. As is traditional, the president of Brazil will be the first to address the world leaders, followed by the U.S. president.
