The Democratic Party (DS) should stay in power until Serbia joins the EU, says the party's Political Council President and MP Dragoljub Micunovic. Speaking in Belgrade on the 22nd anniversary of the founding of the DS, the veteran politician added that "perhaps it wouldn't be good either to have the DS in power always, but until we finish this job and place Serbia in the family of democratic European peoples, we should try to lead Serbia." "DS should remain in power until Serbia joins EU" He also asserted that "Europe" was the goal toward which the party has striven since its founding, and that this remains true today. Serbian voters will elect a new parliament and government later this year, and Micunovic said he believed his party would achieve "an excellent result, and be able to once again put together a coalition government". "But this will happen on different principles, which means that the government's goals and behavior of all actors in the coalition must be clearly defined in advance, so that the government can work more efficiently, dynamically, and without blackmailing," he stated. "We'll see how the citizens will react to that. Our goal is to realistically describe the situation and not to mobilize them with false hope, but to have them realize, aware of the situation, that some things depend on them as well, and that together we can diminish the effects of the crisis, that will pass just like all crises do," continued Micunovic. He also said that the fact the Democrats are in power now will be a disadvantage, and noted that the citizens are "ready to blame the government when they are dissatisfied". "Thus the government is guilty for what it really is guilty for, and for the things that do not depend on it and that it is not guilty for," Micunovic stated, and added that "we must persevere on that road on which we have directed Serbia toward one side during the past 22 years."
