Minister for Kosovo and Metohija Goran Bogdanovic has said that he believed that a planned referendum in northern Kosovo was "completely unneeded". According to announcements from their leaders, local Serbs will vote on whether they accept ethnic Albanian institutions in that part of the southern province. "Referendum political decision of opposition" "This is a purely political decision from the opposition. Make no mistake about it. Nothing happens in Kosovo that is not tied to politics," Bogdanovic, himself an official of the ruling Democrats (DS), told Belgrade's Press tabloid. To the journalist's comment that he appears to suspect the motive for the referendum is to lower Serbia's chances of getting EU candidate status, Bogdanovic's response was brief - yes. Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Krstimir Pantic announced Serbs from northern Kosovo will hold a referendum on February 15. Asked if this means Serbs in Kosovo do not recognize the decisions of the Serbian government and the talks lead by Borislav Stefanovic, Bogdanovic said "of course they don't." "On the other hand, we must be aware that the Serbs who live down there do not want Kosovo institutions to take root. This does not mean we should not talk with the Albanians and negotiate in order to arrive at a final compromise. The solution for the problems in Kosovo must be found," he said. Pointing out that even though he personally feels there is no need for a referendum, the outcome is already known, because the Serbs do not want to recognize Kosovo institutions. "The outcome of the referendum is already known, because all Serbs living in Kosovo do not want Kosovo institutions and there is no dilemma about this. Therefore, I see no reason to spend money on a referendum" the minister said. "I want to believe the referendum will stay nothing but talk, because it is truly unneeded," he concluded.
