Serbia and Russia sign agreement to fight drug trafficking

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić and Russian Service for Drug Control Director Vladimir Ivanov signed an agreement on cooperation against drug trafficking.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic and Russian Service for Drug Control Director Vladimir Ivanov signed an agreement on cooperation against drug trafficking. Dacic assessed that by signing the agreement, Serbia reinforced its involvement in the global fight against drug trafficking, while Ivanov noted that according to expert data, Kosovo represents the logistic base for distribution of drugs to Europe. Dacic recalled that the Serbian police were very efficient in the prevention of cocaine smuggling from South America and that large quantities of the drug were seized all around the world thanks to information from Serbia. Ivanov underscored that around 80 percent of world heroin production is based in Afghanistan, from where the drug is then transported via Balkan and northern routes. The signing of the agreement is an important step toward intercepting the Balkan route, Ivanov said and expressed hope that operative cooperation would soon be launched.
