Serbian Police (MUP) Director Milorad Veljovic says that Montenegrin police officials have told him that fugitive drug lord Darko Saric is not in Montenegro. Asked whether Saric - a Montenegrin native with Serbian passport - was currently hiding in Montenegro, Milorad Veljovic said that he did not believe that this was the case. “We agreed that the two police forces can cooperation successfully if the questions are fully opened. There is no honest cooperation until the questions are fully solved,” he said, adding that neither he nor his Montenegrin colleague "have the right to protect anyone". Veljovic said that he told his Montenegrin counterpart that the Serbian media has speculated that Saric was hiding in his hometown of Pljevlja, in northern Montenegro. “I openly told him that the public in Serbia is, for the most part, convinced that some people who have international warrants out for their arrests are currently located on the territory of Montenegro. He told me openly that he does not have such information, but that he would take measures to find out and to make good on his decisions as the police director and as a professional police officer,” Veljovic said. He said that the Saric crime group was a lot more serious than many thought, adding that the group was discussed at an international conference on the fight against the drug trafficking in April in Brazil. Saric and his gang are suspected of organizing the smuggling of 2.7 tons of cocaine from South America to Europe last year, which was prevented in an international law enforcement operation dubbed Balkan Warrior. Veljovic said that Serbia participated for the first time as an observer in the conference, where it was stated that the Saric case is one of the strongest that has been put together in the last two years. He said that the state administration is very important to the fight against organized crime and that President Boris Tadic represents the "pillar of that fight". Milorad Veljovic (FoNet, file)
