Tensions are running high once again in the Brdjane settlement of northern Kosovska Mitrovica, reports said on Friday. Serbs and ethnic Albanians have gathered at the same location in order to build houses. Flashpoint Kosovska Mitrovica neighborhood tense again Kosovo police, KPS, has increased its numbers there this morning, and there are also some EULEX police and KFOR members in the area. There were no incidents, so police did not intervene, as they did almost daily in April and May when they threw teargas at Serbs who were attempting to cross a line of separation. UNMIK representatives this morning presented the Serbs with building permits to construct five houses close to that line. However, a large group of ethnic Albanians gathered nearby, intent to start preparing the ground for building 25 of their houses. Kosovska Mitrovica District Chief Radenko Nedeljkovic said that the Serb community has a clear position that law must be respected and that rules must be the same for both sides. He reminded that Albanians have already rebuilt 18 houses in the area without acquiring any permits. UNMIK administrator for northern Kosovska Mitrovica Jaroslav Kozak said that the Serbs now have a document based on which they can start building, "while Albanians do not need any for terrain preparations".
