Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua has assured his Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic that his country will not recognize Kosovo. Nigerian daily THISDAY reports on Sunday that the two presidents met in Egypt earlier this week during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit there. Nigeria won't recognize Kosovo Yar’Adua said the decision not to recognize Kosovo came due to Nigeria’s historical experience of the 1967-70 civil war, fought to maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also expressed Nigeria’s desire to deepen and consolidate the existing bilateral ties with Serbia. Tadic welcomed this and urged other countries to await the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the ethnic Albanians' unilateral proclamation. According to the report, the Serbian president earlier appealed to Yar’Adua to reopen the Nigerian Mission in Belgrade, pointing out that such move would help to deepen and consolidate ties between the two nations. Nigeria is the most populous African country with 140 million people and has the second highest GDP on the continent, Beta news agency reminded.

Yar’Adua said the decision not to recognize Kosovo came due to Nigeria’s historical experience of the 1967-70 civil war, fought to maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
