Rasim Ljajic has announced that his Sandzak Democratic Party (SDP) will form a new party with others "of similar orientation". Ljajic, who is a minister in the current government, said that the founding congress of the new party could be scheduled for late October or early November. Ljajic announces new party in fall "On the one hand we believe there is space for making larger blocs in our political scene, on the other, the SDP has shown that it has the capacity to work in all of Serbia, which the recently held local elections convinced us about," he was quoted as saying by Belgrade daily Blic. "It's still early to talk about how these negotiations will end, but it's quite certain that the party will have a social-democratic profile and will work based on four basic principles: freedom, justice, equality and solidarity." Ljajic also said he "does not see himself in a future government". "I've been in power for long enough and it's best to take a break, since there is objective danger there could be saturation. I've participated in one way or another in government for nine years, and that is, at least as far as I'm concerned, a clear signal that I must spare myself and others form any future participation in the executive power," said he. Asked whether the initiative to "expand" the party came after talks with the ruling Democrats (DS), Ljajic said that while preliminary negotiations did take place, essential talks are still ahead. "Whatever I decide, I will not do anything that is aimed against the DS, and for this reason talks with them are the most important to me," he was quoted. Ljajic also stated that the SDP will continue to act alone in the Sanzak region, but that it will team up in a broader coalition and electoral alliance when it comes to the state level.
