The European Commission’s criticisms of slow judicial reform in Serbia are realistic and well-intentioned, says Justice Minister Snezana Malovic. “As a result, we have endeavored to include judicial laws on the parliamentary agenda as soon as possible," the Minister said. "EC criticism realistic, constructive" “They will be a good basis for enhancing judicial efficiency, and safeguarding the interests of Serbian citizens," Malovic told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti She said that she did not agree with the European Commission’s claim that the results in tackling organized crime were not visible. "The European Commission’s report was drawn up at a time when many laws had still to be adopted, the most important of which being the Law on Confiscation of Assets Gained via Criminal Enterprise,” Malovic said, adding that the law had received praise and support during bilateral contacts with ambassadors and EU representatives. She said that the Anti-Organized Crime Special Prosecution Office had “done more in tackling international drug cartels than anyone else before.” Asked whether there had been any misunderstanding with judges after they had criticized the lack of public debate over the set of judicial draft laws, Malovic said that the judges’ proposals had been adopted, by and large. "We are open for further talks, because we have the same goal—an efficient judicial system that will work in good conditions, in the interests of Serbia’s citizens. We are ready to change some things through amendments, providing that they can enhance the law’s purpose,” Malovic said. She said that the Justice Ministry had organized a series of Round Tables since September 2007, that had been attended by experts, as well as judges and prosecutors themselves.
