U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter reiterated U.S. opposition to Serbia’s initiative before the General Assembly. The U.S. does not want Serbia to follow through with its bid to gain approval from the majority of UN General Assembly members for seeking the opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. Munter: U.S. opposes Serbian initiative “Serbia is entitled to its own opinion, but we do not agree with the Serbian request. We hope that we can convince the government to focus on the future and not the past, and to work towards EU integration together,” Munter told daily Blic. He said that American and other foreign investors would come to Serbia only if it continued its road towards the EU and achieved stability, adding that if this did not happen, investors would look elsewhere. “The point is not to forget Kosovo, but what the people want, and all opinion polls show that they want progress, democracy and a normal life, while the Kosovo issue is not among the first things on their minds,” Munter underlined. Commenting on the fact that Serbia had yet to return its ambassador to Washington, Munter said that “the door for the return of the Serbian ambassador to the U.S. is still open, and his return would mean that we could work better on progress together.” Cameron Munter (FoNet, archive)
