Vojislav Kostunica could halt Serbian European integration because of his party's stance regarding Kosovo, analysts say. Political analyst Slobodan Antonic said that the prime minister's Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) could give up on supporting European integration because of its stance on Kosovo, and that Kostunica could potentially refuse to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union. DSS could “turn back on EU” “I predict that there will be a period in which we will seriously, for the first time discuss EU integration. What it demands from us, what we have to do, what use we have from it and how much damage it will cause,” Antonic said. Dusan Pavlovic, from the Faculty of Political Science, said that the most serious disagreement could happen within the ruling coalition as the elections approach, adding that the SAA could be the great point of contention. “It is possible that in between the two elections rounds the offer is given and Tadic says ‘I accept’ while Kostunica says ‘sorry, but we do not.’ If the coalition has not snapped yet, it will snap at that point. And that does not have to be an emotional reaction. It can be an emotion but rational reaction as well. Simply that is the stance of DSS,” Pavlovic said. Political analyst Milan Nikolic, however, said that there would be nothing rational about refusing to sign the SAA. “That would be a bitter emotional stance. That we feel angry and offended. Even if we do feel like that, again, the rational stance is to move towards the EU,” Nikolic said. He said that he expects Kostunica to take the rational, rather than the emotional route, which means that he would not boycott the elections and that he would support Tadic in the second round.
