Report: EU may appoint Ischinger as Kosovo envoy

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier proposed Monday that an international troika, including the European Union, Russia and the United States, should take charge of discussions on the final status of Kosovo. The Contact Group reportedly agreed to the motion Wednesday.

Ischinger, currently serving as Germany’s ambassador to London, is regarded as an expert for the Balkans. From 2001 to 2006, he was the ambassador to the United States.

While working as political director in the German Foreign Office from 1995 to 1998, he participated in the peace talks at Dayton that ended the war in Bosnia.

During the 1999 Kosovo conflict he occupied the state secretary post at the Foreign Ministry. Ischinger also worked on mapping out the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.
