Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government Milan Marković of the Democratic Party (DS) said that the Ministry declined the motion and informed the City Assembly about the decision three days ago.

The ruling coalition in Novi Sad is comprised of the Serb radical Party (SRS), Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS).

Zoran Vučević, Novi Sad Assembly President said that the Assembly would comply by the Ministry’s decision.

“The decision is political in nature, and will satisfy some and aggravate others. The Assembly will by all means abide by the Ministry’s decision,” Vučetić told Beta news agency.

“The question remains whether the Ministry should meddle with the affairs of local self-governments, since that may mean we have returned to the socialist era,” he concluded.
