According to Jeremić, Ugarte showed great interest in the Kosovo issue and reminded that Costa Rica was among the candidates for a new U.N. Security Council member, to be elected on Jan. 1 next year.

Ugarte said it was important that he has had the opportunity to acquaint himself with the Kosovo issue directly in Belgrade.

"We have familiarized ourselves with the Kosovo issue through Resolution 1244 of the U.N. Security Council and the report of the U.N. Security Council mission which visited Kosovo recently, but it is extremely important that we had the opportunity to acquaint ourselves about everything in direct contact with the authorities in Belgrade," Ugarte told journalists.

The Costa Rican minister also met with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica. According to an announcement from the prime minister's cabinet, Ugarte said "it was important to respect the U.N. Charter" and rated the Kosovo and Metohija issue as very sensitive and complex.

During the meeting, Koštunica said the Serbian government was ready to continue talks on the future status of Kosovo "at any time," in the aim of finding "a compromise and sustainable solution" in accordance with international documents and the fundamental values of minority protection -- "the highest level of autonomy for the province within Serbia."

This was the first visit of a Costa Rican foreign minister to Belgrade in the last 30 years.
