“Democrats will not be useful idiots”

The man the Democrats’ announced as their candidate for the next prime minister ahead of the January parliamentary elections, said the other parties engaged in cabinet talks were not ready to make concessions.

“The DS is a responsible, state-building party, however, there certainly exist a line between being responsible and being made into a useful idiot. I wish to say to the 920,000 people who voted for us that we will not cross that line,” Đelić said.

According to him, the post-Easter period saw no meetings between the Democrats, led by president Boris Tadić, and prime minister Vojislav Koštunica’s Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS).

Đelić described the decision to extend the state’s temporary financing as “a financial coup”, while any attempt to extend the deadline to form a new government would be tantamount to “an actual coup”.

Đelić also said his party plans to bring the caretaker government’s decision to extend the temporary financing, widely viewed an unconstitutional, before the Constitutional Court.
