Macedonian journalists walked out of a news conference in protest against police who had beaten a cameraman. The boycott surprised government members, lined up behind Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at a briefing arranged for Thursday to discuss economic reforms. Macedonia: Reporters angry at police On Wednesday, a special undercover police unit assaulted a cameraman from Alsat TV while he was attempting to film the officers as they searched a vehicle carrying an MP involved in an earlier brawl in parliament. Journalists were also angered by reports that no questions, other than those relating to the economy, would be allowed during the Prime Minister’s briefing. “It is not right to have this promotion of the government’s successes and to completely ignore yesterday’s incident when several policemen brutally beat up our colleague”, one journalist complained. After the news conference fiasco, government spokesman Ivica Bocevski told journalists that the government understood, and sympathized with, the journalists’ move and their motives. However, the journalists refused his invitation to return to the hall. Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska approached journalists and condemned the police brutality saying that “the police has already conducted an internal investigation and suspended four policemen suspected of involvement in the incident”. Jankulovska said that criminal charges had already been filed against the suspects. Two hours later, after many journalists had left the government building, the public service television, MTV, carried a live news conference where Gruevski publicized Macedonia’s fourth place in the World Bank’s global survey of countries that have made the biggest progress in improving conditions for business in the past year. Before talking about the success of economic reforms, Gruevski briefly referred to Wednesday’s beating of the cameraman, saying "the government and the press are on the same side on this issue", and said that all measures were being taken to punish those responsible for the incident. Only a handful of media outlets attended the second news conference.
