A unit at a Bulgarian nuclear power station on the Danube River underwent an emergency shutdown Saturday, facility operators said. A statement from the Kozlodui power plant said the incident did not cause any radioactive leak. It was not immediately clear what repairs would be necessary or when the unit might be back in operation. Two older 440-megawatt units of the same type at Bulgaria's only nuclear power station were permanently decommissioned at the end of 2006 because of safety concerns cited by the EU. Their decommissioning was part of requirements for Bulgaria's entry into the European Union this year.
