Macedonia hosts high-profile NATO forum
Increased police patrols are already at work in the lake town of Ohrid, located in the south-west of Macedonia, as well as around major state institutions in Skopje."Part of the road, the route that will be used to transport the participants to the forum from Ohrid airport, will be closed to other traffic," Kotevski said.
Security at border crossings and the country’s two international airports has also been tightened.
Since Monday, border police speedboats have been patrolling the lake coastline near the Gorica hotel complex, where the forum’s participants will stay. All access roads to the complex and nearby hotels are being watched by security cameras.
Macedonian police helicopters and NATO’s AWACS radar planes will keep watch over the town from the air, local media reported.
NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer will chair the two-day forum, which brings together representatives of the 26 NATO member states and 23 partner countries to discuss topics including Kosovo, Afghanistan and energy security topics.
