Bulgaria's former treasury chief alleges corruption

Dimitur Dimitrov, the former treasurer, alleged in a statement released to journalists that he possessed a document that proved Hristo Manchev, the deputy chief prosecutor, had received bribes worth more than 2 million leva (1 million euros) in exchange for influencing trials.

Manchev responded by calling the allegations a "complete lie" and threatened to sue Dimitrov for libel. He said he would ask Bulgaria's chief prosecutor, Boris Velchev, to investigate the matter comprehensively.

The chief prosecutor described the affair as "extremely embarrassing, regardless whether the allegations are true or false.”

Both Manchev and Dimitrov have faced corruption allegations previously. Six months after leaving the office of state treasurer in June last year, Dimitrov came under investigation for alleged criminal mismanagement of public money. The investigation has not yet been closed.

A separate investigation last year cleared Manchev of wrongdoing in relation to a private hotel on the Black Sea coast, owned by his wife and son.
