Miners begin warning strike

The miners are protesting the fact that they have been receiving wages without benefits for over a year.

Union president of the Rembas mine Zvonko Žnider told B92 that Serbian Mining and Energy Minister Aleksandar Popović has refused to solve the problem, but the miners are insisting that the agreement be signed and implemented.

Žnider said that the miners and their families will not be able to receive medical help starting July first, because they are not receiving any healthcare benefits.

A meeting of the union’s executive council has been scheduled for tomorrow, where a decision will be made on what to do next.

Žnider said that a general mining strike is also possible, with workers from all nine Serbian mines participating, starting July 15.
