Serbia, Montenegro to define Port of Bar status

“The port is useless unless it is properly connected with a railway and a highway. Since we contributed to their construction, we should be entitled to certain property rights in the port itself,” Ilić said.

He said that Montenegro would "surely find the interest to, in return for Serbia’s investment in the Montenegrin highway, cede a portion of the port to Serbia."

Ilić said that Serbia was ready to make fresh investments into the broadening of a tunnel on the Belgrade-Bar railway and its further reconstruction.

“However, the status of the Port of Bar has to be defined beforehand,” he stressed.

“In the case that we are denied the use of the port, we will have to make a U-turn in our policy and direct the traffic and transport strategy towards the Thessaloniki Port in Greece,” Ilić said.

Ilić added that Serbian and Montenegrin governments must define the status of the port and agree on whether to jointly embark on its development.
