BELGRADE Former official Nemanja Kolesar has been questioned and remanded in custody for 48 hours in the case of privatization of Smederevo-based Sartid Steel Mill. Kolesar, who was a head of a working group in charge of the Sartid privatization and a then PM Zoran Djindjic’s chief of staff at the time of the sale, is suspected of abuse of office, initiating the bankruptcy procedure and transferring local powers from the Commercial Court in Pozarevac to the Commercial Court in Belgrade. Former Commercial Court President Goran Kljajević was not questioned today despite media reports. He made a decision on March 27, 2003 to lift off all mortgages and collaterals and allowed Sartid to be sold without debts.

Other suspects in the Sartid affair will be questioned, B92 has learned.

Former Deputy PM and Economic Relations Minister Miroljub Labus, former Economy and Privatization minister Aleksandar Vlahović, former Finance Minister Božidar Đelić and Kolesar were questioned about the sale of the steel mill in December 2012.

Sartid was sold to U.S. Steel for EUR 23mn in 2003 while the mill’s debts, that amounted to EUR 1.7bn according to the assessment of the Anti-Corruption Council, were assumed by the state.
