A day after six club-goers suffocated when a fire broke out in a Novi Sad night club, the authorities said that the establishment operated without a license. The Contrast nightclub also did not meet fire standards, and its owners failed to obtain an appropriate license, MUP Emergency Sector Situations chief Predrag Maric said on Monday. Deadly fire nightclub operated without license Maric also stated that he was "certain" that a fire with such a tragic outcome would not have happened had the club operated within its capacity of 150 guests. There was an estimated 350 people inside the club when the blaze spread. Maric also revealed that inspectors visited the establishment in late 2011 and filed minor charges against it for failure to adhere to fire standards. That investigation "also mentioned some sort of electricity theft", said this MUP official, and added that this "could be connected to the faulty wiring under the stage", which is believed to have been the cause of the fire. Maric also noted that "not a single fire extinguisher in the nightclub was in working order" on Sunday night. Late on Monday, the police announced that a fourth suspect was placed under arrest, and identified the man as Miroslav P. Three others - the owner of the premises, Alojz G., and Slavisa S. and Dejan R., who rented them - have been in custody since Sunday. They are suspected of "causing general danger".
