The pre-trial conference in the trial of former leader of the ethnic Albanian so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) Ramuh Haradinaj will be held on August 17. The Hague Tribunal made the decision on Thursday. Haradinaj's defense team has proposed that the trial should start in the last week of July, ahead of the summer break, since the defendant is being kept in detention. However, the Hague refused this request. During the Thursday status conference, Haradinaj's defense was given a deadline until June 16 to file the list of witnesses it has objections to, so that the Prosecutor's Office could reply to the objections by June 27. The trial against Haradinaj and his two associates Laho Brahimaj and Idriz Balaj for war crimes committed in Kosovo is the first trial to be repeated in the history of the Hague. The trial will be repeated due to witness intimidation, as decided by the Appellate Court. By the ruling it adopted in April 2008, the Hague acquitted Haradinaj and Balaj of responsibility, while Brahimaj was sentenced to six years in jail. They were charged with war crimes against Serbs, Roma, and fellow ethnic Albanians.
