22 members of a criminal group have been arrested on suspicion that they shortchanged drivers who filled up at Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) gas stations. The group is believed to have made illegal gains of over EUR 2mn in this way. Official, 21 others arrested for gas fraud 15 gas stations have also been "blocked", according to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. “In recent years, that group has been systematically swindling money from citizens who purchased gasoline at NIS gas stations,” said Dacic. The fraud has been identified at 15 stations and police will continue the operation, it has been announced. Dacic explained that some officials of the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals (DMDM) and NIS Sector for Gas Stations Maintenance enabled the illegal calibrating of gas pumps. The tampering with the gasoline flow defrauded consumers of more than EUR 2mn, Dacic said. Meanwhile, Belgrade daily Blic wrote that there is a Ministry of Economy official among those arrested, identified the man as Veljko Jerkovic, and said he was the leader of the criminal group. But the ministry said in a statement that "Veljko J. is not an official of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, nor is he an employee of the ministry", that Jerkovic has been employed with the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals for the past 13 years, adding that this directorate "falls under the ministry's jurisdiction".
