A U.S. tabloid reporting on the Kovacevic case has received confirmation that there were negotiations between Serbia and Bryan Steinhauer, a daily writes. Belgrade Borba newspaper quotes the New York Post's article which said the U.S. State Department at the same time distanced itself by saying it was "a private matter between the family and the Serbian government". U.S. State Dept. confirms contact? However, Borba also writes that the government contacted Steinhauer's family via the U.S. embassy in Belgrade. According to media reports, the government plans to pay USD 1mn in damages to Steinhauer. The American student was allegedly last year assaulted by Kovacevic during a barroom brawl. Kovacevic, who was at the time also studying stateside, was arrested, but he jumped bail and fled after being issued temporary documents by the Serbian consulate in New York.

However, Borba also writes that the government contacted Steinhauer's family via the U.S. embassy in Belgrade.
