The trial for war crimes committed in the Croatian village of Lovas in 1991 continued today with two police officers taking the witness stand. They were the officers that questioned suspects Dragan Bacic and Zoran Kosijer during the investigation. Police officers questioned in Lovas trial Police officers Srdjan Novkovic and Milan Vasovic were called to testify at the request of the defense, who claimed that their clients had been questioned without their lawyers present. Bacic and Kosijer are two of the 14 suspects in the Lovas case, where 70 Croatian civilians lost their lives. Four members of the territorial defense, four JNA members and six paramilitaries are accused of the crimes. According to the indictment, they killed 22 civilians in their homes and gardens on October 10, 1991 in Lovas and another 23 people in improvised prisons over the course of the following eight days. They are accused of using the civilians as human shields and making them walk across a minefield, leading to the deaths of 22 people, while a further three died in sporadic incidents in that same period.

Police officers Srđan Novković and Milan Vasović were called to testify at the request of the defense, who claimed that their clients had been questioned without their lawyers present.
