Ruling in Mišković kidnapping case

Zemun Clan members Aleksandar and Milos Simovic have been sentenced to eight years behind bars for the kidnap of Delta Holding owner Miroslav Miskovic. Vladimir Milisavljevic, aka Nutter, who is still on the run, was sentenced to seven years, Milan Jurisic to three, and Nikola Bajic to a year and a half. The seven accused received sentences totaling 30 years and nine months for extortion and abduction. The accused were also ordered to pay over EUR 3.3mn in damages. Zelimir Cabrilo, the Simovic brothers’ legal counsel, did not wish to comment on the details of the sentence, at least not until he had received it in written form. He did, however, point out that the injured parties, namely Miskovic, had not had to testify at the trial. The Belgrade District Court overturned an earlier first instance verdict against the defendants handed out during Operation Sabre in 2003 that came in the immediate aftermath of Zoran Djindjic’s assassination, while the re-trial began in February of this year. According to the indictment, Mile Lukovic, the Simovic brothers and Vladimir Milisavljevic kidnapped Miskovic from his home in Bulevar Arsenija Carnojevica in New Belgrade on April 9, 2001. Miskovic, whose abduction was planned by Zemun Clan leader Dusan Spasojevic, was forced to ask Delta employees to pay his ransom of DM 7mn, after which he was released. Želimir Čabrilo, the Simović brothers’ legal counsel, did not wish to comment on the details of the sentence, at least not until he had received it in written form.
