Haradin Balaj, a former member of the KLA, sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal, has been transferred to France to serve out his sentence. Balaj was found guilty of the torture, abuse and murder of Serb and Albanian civilians in the KLA’s prisoner-of-war camp in Lapusnik between May and June 1998. KLA convict transferred to France As a guard in the camp, he personally participated in the creation and maintenance of inhumane conditions, assisting in the murder of nine and torture of one prisoner, reads a statement from the Hague Tribunal. He was found guilty on November 30, 2005 of “torture, abuse and murder,” and was sentenced to 13 years behind bars. Balaj’s co-accused Fatmir Limaj and Isak Musliu were acquitted of the charges. Limaj was identified by witnesses as Captain Celiku, one of the Kosovo Liberation Army's (KLA) commanders, while one witness said he had seen him attend the execution of ten prisoners. The court of appeal upheld both the verdict and Balaj’s sentence on November 27, 2007.
