EU: Serbian steel mill "must not receive govt. assistance"

The Commission acknowledged the failure of the talks on privatization of the Smederevo steel mill and it is willing to conduct open and constructive talks about the matter with the Serbian government, Kocijancic said.

She noted that the Commission believes such a restructuring should ensure continuation of the company's operation.

The spokesperson did not wish to comment on the allegations in Belgrade media according to which Hahn promised EU assistance concerning the steel mill to Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, but she recalled that the metallurgy sector, including the steel mill, must not receive any government assistance as of February 1.

Serbia took on this obligation by signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement, Kocijancic said.
