BELGRADE Trade unions will stage a one-hour warning strike on January 23 in cities across Serbia in protest against the proposed amendments to the Labor Law. This was announced on Tuesday by Ljubisav Orbovic, the president of the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS). Unions to stage "warning strike" on January 23 More widespread protests and a general strike will be organised unless the bill amending the law is withdrawn or its controversial provisions changed, Orbovic told Tanjug. In addition to representatives of the SSSS and the United Trade Unions Independence, a significant number of other, smaller trade unions, will be participating in the warning strike, he said. "We will have several discussions on this in the coming days, after which we will continue with further forms of protests and blockades in cities until there is a general strike in Belgrade," Orbovic said. Most of the trade unions' objections to the bill are related to provisions on part-time work, redundancy benefits, years-of-service allowances and flexible forms of employment. The SSSS and the United Trade Unions Independence have requested that the privatisation and bankruptcy bills also be withdrawn from parliamentary procedure.
