Italy's government strongly opposes Fiat’s decision to shift some investments and production lines of new cars from the Mirafiori plant in Italy to Serbia. This was announced on Thursday in Rome by Italy's European Affairs Minister Andrea Ronchi. Anger in Italy over Fiat’s Serbia plans “We have to ask both the government and the state to get involved in favor of growth and development, and only then to think about (moving) production abroad,” Ronchi said. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the company will shift production of new models Fiat Idea and Lancia Musa to Serbia. Italian ministers said however that this looked "either like a summer joke, or enforcement”, and announce a very strong resistance to Fiat’s idea. President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce Adolfo Urso assessed that Fiat’s intentions to make new car models in Serbia were “inappropriate”. Italian Justice Minister Roberto Calderoli said about Fiat that "nobody can use state aid, take the profit and then leave without paying the check”. In Belgrade, officials said that Fiat's investment would not suffer because of the opposition to move the production of two new car models to Serbia. Economy Ministry advisor Aleksandar Ljubic was quoted as saying that the construction of the company and technology "does not depend on the kind of models to be made in plants in Serbia".
